Chhagalnaiya has erupted in fierce protests following a brutal attack and attempted murder of Nizam Uddin Sajeeb, the Chhagalnaiya correspondent for Mohona Television, while he was performing his professional duties. Local journalists organized a human chain and protest rally demanding exemplary punishment for those involved.
The program, organized by the 'Chhagalnaiya Press Club,' took place on Monday (July 13, 2026) at 10:00 AM at the Zero Point of Chhagalnaiya municipal town.
The event commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran by Salim Ullah Bhuiyan, the correspondent for Dainik Nagorik Bhabna. The opening remarks were delivered by M. Nurul Amin, the Chhagalnaiya correspondent for Dainik Gonokantho.
The protest rally was presided over by Md. Sheikh Kamal, former President of Chhagalnaiya Press Club and correspondent for Dainik Ittefaq. Moderated jointly by ABM Nizam Uddin, Associate Editor of Dainik Digital Somoy, and Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, correspondent for Dainik Feni, the rally was addressed by former Press Club Presidents Kabir Ahmed Siddique, Md. Mostafa, Abul Hasan, and Kamrul Hasan Liton.
Other speakers included former General Secretaries Jahangir Kabir Liton and Abdul Awal Chowdhury; former Vice Presidents Md. Masum Billah Bhuiyan and Shah Alam; former Joint General Secretaries Kazi Nurul Alam Nilu and Shah Ziaul Haque Rubel; and executive members Milon Khondoker, Sepal Nath, Pinu Shikdar, M Delwar Hossain, Kofil Uddin, Ziaul Haque Bappi, Joynal Abedin, Shakhawat Patwary, and Md. Solim Ullah Bhuiyan, among others.
Journalists Nurul Amin, Mitul Chowdhury, Kamrul Hasan, Kazi Md. Mohib Ullah, Abdul Halim, and other local media professionals were also present to express their solidarity.
'A Brutal Plot to Cast the Body into the River'
Expressing their outrage at the rally, speakers stated, "This attack is not just on Sajeeb as an individual, but a naked assault on independent journalism and the free press as a whole."
Highlighting the brutality of the incident, the speakers added, "Armed terrorists from an illegal sand extraction syndicate aimed a revolver at journalist Sajeeb's chest and shot at him in an attempt to murder him. After severely beating him, they kicked him into the Feni River. The attackers' primary objective was to brutally murder Sajeeb and wash his body away in the river. Fortunately, local residents rushed to the spot immediately, preventing the terrorists from completing their mission."
Thanks to Administration, Warning Issued
The speakers thanked the police administration for taking immediate action and arresting two accused named in the First Information Report (FIR)—Imam Hossain and Yunus.
However, they warned that the masterminds remain at large. They demanded that the chief instigators behind the incident and the remaining armed terrorists who directly participated in the attack be swiftly identified and brought to justice. Otherwise, the journalist community warned they would be forced to announce tougher programs.
