Just a few days of light to moderate rainfall have laid bare the fragile state of the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway. Large, hazardous potholes have developed across various key points of this critical artery, bringing road traffic to a near standstill. The situation has thrown the nation’s import-export sector into profound uncertainty while causing immense distress to everyday commuters.
Key stretches of the highway have seen asphalt strip away, leaving deep craters in its place. Drivers are forced to navigate these sections at a crawl, triggering artificial traffic jams that stretch for miles. The peril heightens at night when rain conceals these road traps, making accidents a daily occurrence.
According to transport and engineering experts, the yearly recurrence of this collapse stems directly from sub-standard construction materials and flawed drainage design. The consequence is twofold: transport operators suffer billions of takas in vehicle damage, while millions of lost working hours deal a severe blow to national trade.
Transport operators warn that unless emergency repairs are executed immediately, the country's most important economic corridor risks complete dislocation
