Two people were detained by local residents and later handed over to police after they allegedly assaulted the driver of a private car and attempted to flee with the vehicle in Mirsharai, Chattogram, on Sunday afternoon.
The detainees have been identified as Sheikh Mohammad Al Yasha (30) and Jobeda Khanam Chowdhury, who are residents of the Halishahar area under Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram city. According to police, the two are related as brother-in-law and sister-in-law.
The injured driver, Md. Selim (42), is a resident of Mithar Khal in Chandraganj Upazila of Lakshmipur district.
The incident took place at the CP Mor area of the National Special Economic Zone in Mirsharai.
According to police and local sources, Al Yasha and Jobeda hired the black-colored private car from Alankar Mor in Chattogram city on Sunday afternoon and traveled to the CP Mor area in Mirsharai. Later in the afternoon, they allegedly attacked the driver and attempted to escape with the vehicle.
Local residents intervened, chased the suspects, and detained them after allegedly assaulting them. Police arrived at the scene shortly afterward and took the injured driver, the two suspects, and the vehicle to Mirsharai Upazila Health Complex.
Dr. Tapas Chowdhury, the emergency department physician at Mirsharai Upazila Health Complex, said that police brought the driver and the two passengers to the hospital at around 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. He said all three had only minor injuries and were released after receiving primary treatment.
Mirsharai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Farida Yasmin said that preliminary information suggests the suspects came from Chattogram city and allegedly attacked the driver before attempting to flee with the private vehicle in the CP Mor area of the National Special Economic Zone.
"The two suspects have been taken to the police station for questioning. The owner of the vehicle has also arrived at the station after being informed. We are investigating the incident to determine the actual circumstances," the OC said.
