Staff Correspondent: Those who were subjected to torture in the opposition for the past 17 years are again adopting the fascist traits and path of the previous government after coming to power, said Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman. He raised the question and said, "You were also oppressed like us, so why are you going to be oppressors now?" He said this as the chief guest at a discussion titled 'Jan Dib, Juli Dib Na' organized at the Abdus Salam Hall of the National Press Club at 10:30 am on Sunday (August 2). Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said, "The current ruling party should think about how the people of Bangladesh, especially the leaders and activists of the opposition political party, scholars, journalists, civil society and ordinary working people have spent their days under extreme torture for 17 and a half years." But even after being liberated through a bloody mass uprising, the same behavior of repression and oppression of the previous government is being retained. The current practice of conspiracy, propaganda and force to suppress opposition is nothing but an exact photocopy of the previous government. Regarding the Election Commission, the Jamaat Amir said that a person known as an active worker of BNP has been appointed as the Additional Secretary of the Election Commission on a contractual basis for one year. How can a person who has worked for the party at the risk of his life be expected to hold fair elections by placing him in such a neutral position? Criticizing the past elections, he said that the nation rejected the elections of 2014, 2018 and 2024 with hatred. The sun does not always remain in one place due to the power. Just as the sun sets after noon, those who insult the will of the people ultimately have to flee their own country. History repeats itself over and over again. Referring to the families and students affected by the recent political violence, he said, an innocent intermediate examinee named Alif, who used to run his family by tutoring, was beaten with rods and his eyes were damaged. Today, his eyes have been blinded, can the Honorable Prime Minister restore his eyesight? He also said that even in the post-election period, several colleagues have lost their lives at the hands of the current ruling party and false cases are being filed in various places. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also said that when their party was banned on August 1, 2024, the democratic parties including BNP and LDP strongly protested against it. But it took only a few days for those who had taken that decision to perpetuate power to fall. This is a sign of Allah's judgment and power. The discussion meeting held under the chairmanship of Bangladesh Labor Party Chairman Dr. Mustafizur Rahman Iran was attended by LDP Chairman Dr. Col. (Retd.) Oli Ahmed, Bir Bikram. The meeting was attended by top leaders of other democratic political parties, activists of the 24th People's Uprising, and journalists.
