Winding mountain paths, where the only options for transport are local Chander Gari (jeeps) or motorcycles lead to some of Khagrachhari's most remote schools, spreading the light of education nearly 10 kilometers away from the nearest market. Standing beside the students of these institutions, who persevere despite geographic challenges and infrastructural limits, is the social organization Elevating Society for Skill Development (ESSD).
Between July 26 and July 28, essential educational materials—including chalks and slates—were distributed to 397 underprivileged students across seven schools and education centers in remote areas of Khagrachhari Sadar, Matiranga, and Panchhari upazilas. The program was conducted with support from the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund of DBL Ceramics Limited.
Institutions That Received Support
Khagrachhari Sadar: 83 students from Uttar Ganjapara Non-Government Primary School and 73 students from Rabidhan Para Non-Government Primary School.
Matiranga Upazila: 92 students from Doldoli Asha Ofnong Non-Government Primary School and 99 students from Adarshagram Anwar Begum Ta'limul Quran Madrasa.
Panchhari Upazila: Students from Purba Domdompara Center, Domdompara Center, and Santalpara Center.
The Harsh Realities of Life and Education in the Hills
During the distribution, Shadman Bin Samad, Director (Management, Programs & Finance) of ESSD, and Program Manager Farhan observed the ground realities of the remote hill tracks firsthand.
They noted that maintaining educational opportunities in the hills is immensely challenging. Beyond difficult transportation, acute scarcity of pure drinking water plagues these families, forcing them to trek 7 to 10 kilometers daily just for drinking water. Monsoon landslides and damaged roads make travel even more precarious.
ESSD authorities confirmed that such sustainable initiatives will continue in the future to pave the way for quality education and community development for underprivileged hill children. They expressed hope that integrated efforts will bring a lasting positive impact on these children's educational journeys.
