Jahangir Alam, Staff Reporter. Bandarban echoed with traditional hill tunes and vibrant ethnic attire as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2026 was celebrated with grand festivities on Sunday (August 9). Local ethnic minority communities observed the day through various programs centered around this year's theme: "Applying the Creative Strength of Indigenous Communities to Preserve Their Lives, Livelihoods, and Existence." From early morning, youths and elders from diverse indigenous communities residing in remote areas gathered at the town's Rajbari Field. Dressed in colorful traditional attire, the field transformed into a vibrant hub of harmony and cultural diversity. Following the main discussion session at the Rajbari Field, a colorful rally was brought out. The rally paraded through the town's key streets before concluding back at the starting point. Alongside the main event organized by the celebration committee, the 'Bangladesh Tanchangya Students’ Welfare Forum' (Bandarban Region) hosted separate cultural and awareness-raising programs. Addressing the discussion, speakers highlighted that the unique languages, cultures, and heritage of the indigenous communities are facing numerous challenges today. They emphasized that preserving this diverse way of life is essential for safeguarding their existence and achieving sustainable development. The speakers strongly urged both government and non-government sectors to take effective initiatives to secure indigenous rights and protect their linguistic and cultural identity. The day-long celebration was attended by representatives of various ethnic minority groups, leaders of local indigenous organizations, and members of civil society. The event concluded in the afternoon, marked by traditional attire, rich cultural expressions, and a renewed pledge to protect indigenous rights.
