Jewel Nag, Mirsarai, Chattogram. A police officer was found hanging inside a room at a residential hotel in Mirsarai, Chattogram, on Monday, while his wife was found injured and covered in blood in the same room, police said. The deceased was identified as Aminul Islam, 32, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police. He was the son of the late Abul Hossain of West Mayani village in Mayani Union of Mirsarai. His wife, Tahmina Akter, 27, was rescued from the hotel room in an injured condition. According to police and family sources, Aminul and Tahmina had been married for two years and had a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter. The couple had reportedly been experiencing marital problems for a long time. Several mediation meetings had also been held over the disputes, but the problems between them did not subside. Aminul had recently returned from his workplace in Rangamati and visited his in-laws' house in the Jorarganj area of Mirsarai. From there, he went to Relax Zone, a residential hotel at Bartakia Bazar in Mirsarai, at around 2:00pm on Sunday. Police said the incident apparently took place sometime during the night. After receiving information, police went to the hotel at around 11:00am on Monday and recovered Aminul's body hanging inside the room. His wife Tahmina was also found injured in the same room and was immediately taken to Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex. Dr Meher Nigar, the physician on duty at the emergency department of Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex, said Tahmina Akter was brought to the hospital at around 12:30pm on Monday. “She had swelling on her face, lips and tongue. Her nose was bleeding and her face appeared distorted. There were marks around her neck indicating that something had been tightly wrapped around it. Although she was conscious, she was unable to speak,” the doctor said. As her condition was critical, she was given initial treatment and later referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, Dr Meher Nigar added. Aminul's elder brother, Md Abul Hasan, said he works at a garment factory in Chattogram city. “I was in the city when I heard that my brother's hanging body had been recovered from a hotel. I am now returning home. Since their marriage two years ago, my brother had been having marital disputes with Tahmina. Several local mediation meetings were held over the matter, but peace never returned to their married life. I never imagined that my brother would meet such a tragic fate,” he said. Shariful Islam, a sub-inspector of Mirsarai Police Station who was present when the body was recovered, said police went to Relax Zone residential hotel after receiving information about the hanging body of the police officer. “We recovered Aminul Islam's hanging body from the hotel room. His wife, Tahmina Akter, was also rescued from the same room in an injured condition and taken to the Upazila Health Complex. Aminul's body is currently in police custody,” he said. The sub-inspector said police initially suspected that the incident might have stemmed from marital disputes. “However, the entire matter is being investigated,” he added. Police said further details would emerge after the investigation.
