Several Jamaat-e-Islami activists accompanying a Member of Parliament (MP) fell into the river when a long-standing, dilapidated wooden footbridge collapsed during an inspection in Dimla, Nilphamari. The MP, Principal Maulana Abdus Sattar, narrowly escaped the accident.
Eyewitnesses said that MP Principal Abdus Sattar, along with party leaders and activists, went to inspect a wooden footbridge over the Nautara River in Natabari area of Sadar Union. The bridge had been in a dilapidated and risky condition for a long time.
While the MP was crossing the bridge, several accompanying leaders and activists also stepped onto it. Suddenly, a section of the bridge behind the MP collapsed, causing several activists to fall into the river below. The MP, who is also the Ameer of Nilphamari district Jamaat, narrowly escaped the accident.
Local residents and other leaders and activists present at the scene rescued those who had fallen into the river. However, no one was seriously injured in the incident.
MP Principal Maulana Abdus Sattar said, “Local people have been suffering greatly for a long time because of the dilapidated and risky condition of the footbridge. While I was inspecting the bridge’s dangerous condition in person, a section of it collapsed and some of the leaders and activists accompanying me fell below. By the grace of the Almighty, no one was seriously injured.
