Jute farmers of Saltha Upazila of Faridpur are in trouble. As there is no water in the vicinity of the jute fields, additional transport and labor costs are incurred while taking the jute from distant rivers, canals or ponds. Additional irrigation at the beginning of the season and now far-flung jute raising have greatly increased the cost of production. However, due to the recent rains, some water has come into the reservoirs, and the locals are currently busy removing and drying the fibers.
Various areas including Jadunandi of the upazila can be seen, the busyness of farmers in river, canal and bill water from morning. Some are removing fiber from the jute rug, some are drying it in the sun after washing.
According to farmers, Saltha's rural economy depends heavily on jute and onions. Miraj Molya, a farmer of Jadunandi area, said, "As there is no water near the land, we had to hire a car to take jute from the river. If we do not get a good price for jute, there will be a big loss this time." Alauddin, another farmer, said that many have raised jute by adding water to their own ponds for fear of cost. He demanded to ensure the fair price of jute in the market in accordance with the cost of production.
According to the information of Saltha Upazila Agriculture Office, 13 thousand 290 hectares of jute has been planted in the upazila this season. Among these, 'JRO-524' (Nabil) variety of Tosha jute is the most cultivated.
Upazila Assistant Jute Development Officer Abdul Bari said, "Due to lack of rain, the production cost of farmers due to irrigation and transportation has increased slightly. At present, the process of removing fiber is going on."
Regarding the overall issue, Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer agriculturist Rezaul Karim said that all kinds of suggestions have been given by the agriculture department from the beginning. However, the yield of jute this year has been slightly affected due to adverse weather conditions.
