Jahangir Alam, Staff Reporter Environmental pollution has reached an alarming level in Boroiyarhat Municipality—one of Chattogram’s key commercial hubs—due to the absence of a designated dumping station and a permanent waste management framework. Indiscriminate dumping of garbage along key points of the municipality, on footpaths, and adjacent to the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway is subjecting local residents, commuters, and traders to severe daily hardship. A spot visit revealed heaps of household waste, plastic bottles, and rotting food dumped along the Boroiyarhat stretch of the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway, as well as main market entrances and pedestrian walkways. Lacking a permanent waste facility, the municipality and market authorities frequently discard garbage in open public spaces and along roadsides. The decaying waste emits an unbearable stench, creating significant health hazards for pedestrians, local business owners, and transit passengers. Local traders and daily commuters expressed intense frustration, noting that thousands of people navigate the market area and highway daily. The lack of a structured, planned cleanliness drive has rendered footpaths virtually impassable. Beyond the environmental degradation, open dumping along a national highway severely damages the aesthetic image and civic profile of the municipality. Residents and civic activists have called on municipal authorities to urgently designate a permanent dumping site and implement a modern waste collection and disposal framework. Conscious citizens emphasized that routine road sweeping alone will not solve the issue; a long-term solution requires dedicated disposal infrastructure. To mitigate environmental and public health risks, local sufferers are demanding immediate, decisive action from municipal authorities to ensure a cleaner, healthier Boroiyarhat.
