A pedestrian was killed and a microbus driver severely injured when a reckless Chittagong-bound truck rammed into a line of vehicles waiting outside a CNG refueling station on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Chhagalnaiya upazila on Thursday morning.
The collision was so severe that five stationary vehicles—including three microbuses, a minibus, and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw—were completely crushed.
The incident occurred around 9:00 AM in front of Iqbal CNG Filling Station in the Muhuriganj area of the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Jwel Das (30), a worker at the local PHP factory in Muhuriganj and a native of Hatiya upazila in Noakhali district.
According to eyewitnesses and local sources, a long queue of CNG auto-rickshaws, microbuses, and minibuses had been standing on the highway since Wednesday afternoon due to an acute gas crisis. The parked vehicles occupied a significant portion of the road, disrupting regular traffic flow on the Chittagong-bound lane.
On Thursday morning, Jwel Das was walking to work when a speeding truck ran him over, killing him on the spot. Immediately after crushing the pedestrian, the truck lost control and rammed into a queued minibus. The impact triggered a chain-reaction collision, smashing three microbuses and an auto-rickshaw positioned ahead of it.
The driver of one of the damaged microbuses sustained critical injuries during the crash.
Following the accident, enraged locals and bystanders caught the truck driver and handed him a beating. Officers from the Fazilpur Highway Police Station later arrived at the scene, brought the situation under control, and seized the truck.
Local transport drivers expressed deep frustration over the recurring hazard, urging the authorities to resolve the gas shortage quickly and restore order on the highway to prevent further casualties.
Confirming the details, Shahidul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (Acting) of Fazilpur Highway Police Station, stated that the victim's body was handed over to his family without an autopsy upon their request. "The truck involved in the crash has been seized, and legal proceedings are currently underway," he added.
