There have been allegations of operating multiple lime burning factories in the Dattapara area of Ward No. 8 of Sonargaon Municipality in Narayanganj. A section of local residents have alleged that they are suffering from environmental pollution, smoke and various types of suffering due to the activities of these factories in populated areas.
Some local residents have alleged that these factories are being run with the patronage of influential circles. They claim that Sonargaon Upazila BNP General Secretary and potential municipal mayoral candidate Md. Mosharraf Hossain is running such businesses by using political influence.
The locals further allege that there are questions about the ownership of the land on which the factory is being operated. They claim that although there is a dispute or ambiguity about the actual ownership of the land, the place is being used by using influence.
Apart from this, some locals claim that cases of obtaining financial benefits by showing political influence and fearing various lawsuits are also being discussed in the area. However, the local residents could not present any written or documented evidence in support of these allegations.
It was learned from talking to the locals on the spot that the factory has been operating for a long time. There have been various discussions in the area about its activities for a long time. Some residents, on condition of anonymity, said that they are afraid to complain publicly.
The locals alleged that the smoke and other waste emitted during the burning of lime is having an adverse effect on the surrounding environment. They also raised questions about the legality of operating such factories in populated areas.
The local residents have drawn the attention of the Sonargaon Upazila Administration, the Department of Environment and the concerned authorities in this regard. They demanded that the legality of the factories, environmental clearances, land ownership and issues related to their operation be investigated impartially and necessary legal action be taken. However, Md. Mosharraf Hossain's statement could not be obtained.
