A family has allegedly been attacked following a long-standing dispute over residential land in the Baro Awlia Madhyam Sonaichhari area of Ward No. 7 under Sonaichhari Union No. 8 in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram.
Three members of the family, including Yunus Mia, his wife and their son, were reportedly injured in the attack. Yunus Mia, who sustained serious injuries, has been admitted to a hospital in Chattogram for advanced treatment.
According to local sources and members of the victim's family, the incident took place around 1:00pm on Wednesday (August 12) at Yunus Mia's newly built house.
The family alleged that Yunus Mia's younger brothers, Bablu and Alamgir, along with three to five others, were assaulting his son. Hearing their son's screams, Yunus Mia and his wife rushed to the scene, where they were also allegedly attacked.
The family claimed that the alleged attackers beat Yunus Mia and his wife indiscriminately with sticks. Hearing their cries, local residents rushed to the scene, prompting the attackers to leave, according to the family.
The family also claimed that several people, including Jannatul Ferdous and Jaheda Begum, were present during the incident.
The injured family members were initially taken to Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex. After receiving primary treatment, Yunus Mia's wife returned home. However, as Yunus Mia's condition was considered serious, he was later transferred to a hospital in Chattogram for better treatment.
According to the victim's family, the dispute is not a new one. The two sides have allegedly been involved in a long-standing dispute over residential land. The family further claimed that Yunus Mia and his son had been attacked several times in the past.
They alleged that Yunus Mia sustained serious injuries in the latest incident after being beaten with sticks.
Several local residents said the two parties involved in the dispute are members of the same family. They said the long-standing dispute over residential land has led to tension in the area on several occasions.
Meanwhile, when this correspondent visited the home of the accused to seek their comments, the house was found locked. No family members were available, and therefore, their statement could not be obtained.
The victim's family has demanded a fair investigation into the incident, legal action against those involved in the alleged attack and security for their family members.
The family is also preparing to file a case with the court in connection with the incident.
Contacted over the matter, the Officer-in-Charge of Sitakunda Police Station said that if the victims submit a complaint, the police will investigate the incident and take legal action in accordance with the law.
