Two Bangladeshi women were arrested on Friday night while attempting to illegally enter India through the Phulgazi border area in Feni. Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), assisted by the Village Defence Party (VDP), detained them from the Madhya Kamalla area near the Noapur border.
The arrestees have been identified as Sona Laxmi (70), wife of late Sudhir Das from Nayakhali village in Mehendiganj Upazila, Barishal, and Shantana (40), wife of Bishu Das from Dolgoni village in Chitalmari Upazila, Bagerhat.
According to BGB sources, the two women were spotted moving suspiciously near border pillar 2131-7 S under the Noapur Border Outpost (BOP) of the 10 BGB Battalion. Members of the local VDP intercepted them while they were attempting to cross into Indian territory and handed them over to a BGB patrol team. BGB later transferred the arrestees to Phulgazi Police Station for legal action.
Md. Shaheen Miah, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Phulgazi Police Station, stated that preliminary investigations revealed both women had previously lived in India. They had recently arrived in Bangladesh and were attempting to return across the border.
The OC added that a case has been filed against them under the relevant passport and border control laws. A Feni court ordered them sent to prison on Saturday afternoon.
