Rajapur (Jhalokathi) Correspondent. In Rajapur, Jhalokathi, allegations have been raised that a multi-storied building is being constructed by encroaching on government canal land. Despite being ordered to stop construction multiple times, the work is allegedly continuing, sparking anger among locals. The allegation surrounds a building under construction on the north side of the bridge adjacent to the Kacha Bazar in the upazila headquarters, in Mathbari Union. The owner is Md. Abul Kalam Azad, son of late Muzaffar Hawladar. He currently resides in the Bagri Mridha Bari area. Locals allege that during construction, the administration surveyed the land and identified that a portion on the south side of the building falls on government land. Later, they were ordered to cut off that portion of the balcony and demolish the roof to vacate the government land. However, it is further alleged that later the balcony was extended again onto the government canal land, flooring was cast, stairs were built connecting to the bridge, and fencing was put up. Locals also claim that recently the cut-off balcony rods were welded back together under the cover of night and concrete was poured again. Local resident Md. Shahidul Islam said, The matter should be properly investigated and necessary action taken. However, Abul Kalam Azad denied the allegation of encroaching on government land. He said, I am occupying even less land than the amount I purchased. I laid brick soling on government land for movement and built stairs for getting up and down. Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Rajapur, Md. Shamim Reza Sajeb said,The land will be surveyed soon by a government surveyor. If it is proven that it has encroached on government canal land, legal action will be taken.
