Four members of the same family in Machuapara area of Rangpur city were strangled to death, according to the doctor who conducted their autopsies. The fluid found near the victims’ faces was not caused by any chemical or chemical burn. Rather, the changes in the color and appearance of their faces were the result of the natural decomposition process of the bodies, said Bablu Kumar Biswas, Assistant Professor of the Forensic Department and the autopsy doctor.
On Monday (August 24), Bablu Kumar Biswas said that when a dead body begins to decompose, the exposed parts of the body that remain outside clothing often become dark in color. He said the changes observed on the victims’ faces were also due to this natural process and were not caused by any chemical burn.
He said, “It is true that the faces appeared dark. There is no denying that. But this happens during the decomposition process. As the blood and body tissues begin to decompose, their color gradually changes. It is simply a natural part of decomposition. There were no signs of any chemical burn.”
Regarding the cause of death, Bablu Kumar Biswas said, “They were killed by strangulation. There may have been some minor injuries in different parts of the bodies due to a struggle. Apart from that, nothing else was found.”
Earlier, after the bodies of the four family members were recovered, police noticed a liquid substance near their faces. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had also said that the victims’ faces appeared “horrific.” This raised suspicions about whether any chemical substance had been used on the bodies.
Rangpur CID’s acting Superintendent of Police Sumit Chowdhury had said that the victims’ faces initially appeared severely disfigured and that some liquid substance was found near their mouths. Therefore, police initially suspected that a chemical might have been used. The matter was referred to the forensic doctor for confirmation.
However, according to the autopsy doctor, there were no signs of chemical burns on the bodies. The dark and disfigured appearance of the faces was caused by changes in the blood and body tissues during decomposition.
Retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty was the head of the family. He lived with his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, son Priyam and daughter Agami. On Saturday night, police recovered the bodies of all four family members from their home in Machuapara, Rangpur city.
Police recovered the four bodies and sent them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for autopsies. After the autopsies, the bodies were handed over to the family on Sunday evening. Their last rites were completed at the Dakkhiganj cremation ground in the city at around 10:30pm that night.
Police arrested two neighbors, Siddhartha Das, 23, and Mugdha Das, 19, on Saturday night in connection with the killings. Their statements were recorded under Section 164 before Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court-2 at around 11:30pm on Sunday. They were later sent to jail.
On Sunday, Gopinath Chakraborty, elder brother of the deceased Ganapati Chakraborty, filed a murder case with Rangpur Kotwali Police Station. No accused was named in the case. The case was filed against unidentified suspects, and no specific number of accused was mentioned.
