The Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized a major drug consignment comprising 5 kilograms of Crystal Meth (Ice) and 5,000 Yaba tablets in two separate operations in the border upazila of Teknaf, Cox's Bazar. One alleged drug peddler was detained during the drives conducted on Sunday and Monday.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, Media Officer of the Coast Guard Headquarters, confirmed the matter through a press release on Monday morning.
According to Coast Guard sources, acting on a tip-off regarding a large shipment of Crystal Meth entering Bangladesh from Myanmar across the Naf River, a team from Coast Guard Station Teknaf and Outpost Shahparir Dwip took up positions near Golarchar in Shahparir Dwip around 3:00 AM on Monday. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the smugglers dropped a polythene wrap inside a nearby tamarisk (Jhaubon) forest and fled the scene. A subsequent search yielded approximately 5 kg of Ice wrapped inside tea packets.
In a separate operation at around 6:00 PM on Sunday (August 23), the Coast Guard intercepted a suspicious auto-rickshaw in the Keruntoli area of Teknaf. During the search, they arrested one drug peddler red-handed along with 5,000 pieces of Yaba tablets valued at around BDT 25 lakh.
The Coast Guard official stated that legal proceedings regarding the seized drugs and the detainee are currently underway. He added that the Coast Guard will maintain its strict stance, regular drives, and intelligence surveillance to curb drug trafficking along the border regions.
