The growing menace of drugs is engulfing every layer of society. Drugs are not only destroying individual lives but also having a devastating impact on families and the overall social structure. To protect society from the scourge of drugs, families, educational institutions, the administration and people from all walks of life must work together, said Chattogram District Commissioner and District Magistrate Mohammad Jahidul Islam Mia.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at an anti-drug rally organized by the Sitakunda Upazila Administration at the field of Bhaterkhil Government Primary School in Muradpur Union of Sitakunda upazila, Chattogram, on Tuesday (August 25).
The District Commissioner said, “Students should not be prepared merely to obtain certificates; they must be nurtured into responsible human beings. At the same time, they need to be made aware of the devastating consequences of drug abuse.” He urged parents to remain more responsible and vigilant about where their children go, whom they associate with and what they are doing.
He said drug abuse destroys peace and happiness within families while pushing the younger generation toward destruction. Merely enforcing the law will not be enough to prevent the spread of drugs; a strong social resistance must also be built against it.
The District Commissioner further said that eliminating drugs cannot be achieved by the administration or law enforcement agencies alone. Families, educational institutions, elected representatives, teachers, guardians and people from all sections of society must take a united stand against drugs. He also stressed the need to strengthen social awareness and take legal action against drug dealers and users.
The programme was presided over by Mohammad Fakrul Islam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Sitakunda. Among others, Faisal Rabbi, Assistant Commissioner (Land); Mohinul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Sitakunda Model Police Station; and Golam Rahman, Upazila Primary Education Officer, were present.
Officials from various departments of the upazila administration, teachers, local representatives, guardians and prominent members of the community also attended the programme.
Speakers at the rally called for immediate and united social resistance against drugs. They emphasized the need for families and educational institutions to play a more effective role in keeping young people and students away from drugs. They also urged the people to join hands with the administration to build a drug-free Sitakunda.
