Bangladesh will remain more vigilant and alert in the future regarding water aggression from India, Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie stated today. He emphasized that both the government and the citizens will stay cautious to ensure the people of the country do not fall victim to any form of aggression.
The Minister made these remarks on Tuesday (August 25) afternoon while responding to questions from reporters during an inspection of the Muhuri River flood control embankment in the Ghatghar area of Parshuram, Feni.
Describing India as a neighboring and friendly nation, the Water Resources Minister said, "The friendly relations between the two countries should be more positive and mutually beneficial. India must also consider how positive this friendship needs to be. We hope India will remain fully mindful of this and maintain friendly ties." He added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the people of Bangladesh would also remain vigilant on this issue.
During the visit, he also reiterated the government's zero-tolerance stance against corruption. "The government has assumed responsibility after being elected by the people following 17 years of corruption and misrule. While we may not claim overnight zero-tolerance, our resistance and challenge against corruption will continue uninterrupted," the Minister asserted. As a native of the greater Noakhali region, he noted that completing all development works, including the Muhuri-Kahua project, with complete transparency is his personal responsibility.
Regarding the ECNEC-approved Muhuri-Kahua project, the Minister informed that the first phase of the project—approved at a cost of BDT 1,542 crore 16 lakh—does not require any land acquisition. However, if land is required in the second phase, affected individuals will receive fair compensation. The project, slated for completion by 2030, will be officially inaugurated next month by the Prime Minister during his visit to Feni.
Feni-1 Member of Parliament Rafiqul Alam Majnu, Reserved Seat Member of Parliament Rehana Akhter Ranu, Deputy Commissioner Monira Haq, and Superintendent of Police Pratyush Kumar Majumder, alongside senior officials of the local administration and BNP, were present during the inspection.
