Mohinul Islam Sujon, Crime Reporter. The investigation into the murder of four members of a family, including a retired teacher, in Rangpur has been transferred from Kotwali Police Station to the Detective Branch (DB). Police said the investigating agency was changed to ensure a more transparent investigation and to submit the charge sheet quickly. The matter was confirmed by Sanatan Chakraborty, Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Branch of Rangpur Metropolitan Police. According to sources, on Monday (August 24) afternoon, Milon Chatterjee, Inspector (Investigation) of Kotwali Police Station and the previous investigating officer in the case, went to the DB office and handed over the necessary information, evidence, and documents to Zinnat Ali, Officer-in-Charge of the Metropolitan Detective Branch and the new investigating officer. Later that afternoon, both the former and newly appointed investigating officers visited the crime scene at Machuapara, including the residence of teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel. Sanatan Chakraborty, Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Branch of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, told journalists that the two arrested suspects had given confessional statements before the court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure until late Sunday night. “We have learned from court sources that the accused have basically given the same account of the incident that our Commissioner briefed journalists about and informed the public. However, they have also added some details that they had not previously told us,” Sanatan Chakraborty said. He said, “The case has been handed over to the DB. Police Inspector Zinnat Ali of the Detective Branch is now the investigating officer of the case. He has been assigned the responsibility of conducting the investigation.” Earlier, on Saturday night, the bodies of Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50, their daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25, a postgraduate student, and their fifth-grade son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam, 12, were recovered from their home. It was learned that all four had been strangled to death. Two people were arrested early Sunday morning in connection with the incident. The arrested suspects were Mugdha Das, 23, son of Kanudas of Machuapara area, and Siddhartha Das, 19, son of Binay Chandra Das. At a press conference that afternoon, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner (DIG) Abdul Mabud said that the teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, along with his wife and two children, were killed after they allegedly prevented the suspects from consuming yaba on the roof of the house. The bodies of the four victims were handed over to their family members on Sunday afternoon after autopsies were completed. Their last rites were performed at Dakkhiganj cremation ground in the city at around 10:30 pm that night.
