Biplob Kumar Das, Staff Reporter. In Nagarkanda, Faridpur, a husband named Liton Mia, also known as Litu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the court for the murder of his wife Kohinur Begum by strangulation and attempting to dispose of the body due to dowry demands. He has also been fined 50,000 taka, with an additional four months of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment. Additionally, for the charges of concealing evidence and disposing of the corpse under section 201 of the Penal Code, the accused has been sentenced to an additional three years of imprisonment and fined 10,000 taka, with an extra month of imprisonment in default of payment. The court has stated that both sentences will be executed simultaneously. However, the accused was absent during the verdict. On Thursday afternoon, Judge Ashok Kumar Dutta of the Special District Judge Court in Faridpur announced this verdict. The convicted Liton Mia is the son of the late Alauddin Mia from the Shasha North Para area of Nagarkanda. According to the case statement and court sources, Liton Mia married Kohinur Begum about 16 years ago. They have two children together. Since the marriage, Liton and his family members have been physically and mentally torturing Kohinur over dowry demands. When Kohinur expressed her inability to provide dowry, the level of torture increased alarmingly. At one point, without informing Kohinur, Liton remarried and pressured his first wife and children to leave the house. He also threatened to kill Kohinur and dispose of her body if she did not leave the house. Subsequently, on the night of August 7, 2021, Kohinur Begum fell asleep in her room with her daughter. Around 12:30 AM, when her daughter woke up and did not find her mother in bed, she informed her brother who was nearby. Later, in the morning, relatives found Kohinur's lifeless body lying by the pond on the south side of the house. After this incident, a murder case was filed at the Nagarkanda police station, and the police submitted a charge sheet to the court after investigation. After a lengthy hearing and examination of evidence, the court ruled that the charges against the accused were proven beyond reasonable doubt. Public Prosecutor Azizur Rahman stated, "The prosecution has been able to prove the accused's crime through adequate evidence. Justice has been served in this verdict, and the prosecution is satisfied with it."
