The Rangpur Bar Association has announced that its members will not provide legal representation to the accused in the murder case involving retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three other members of his family.
The announcement was made by Advocate Aftab Uddin, general secretary of the Rangpur Bar Association, at a press conference on the quadruple murder held at the Bar Association building on Saturday (August 29) morning.
He said, “The murder of former Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family is one of the most heinous incidents. We strongly condemn the incident. Along with several government lawyers and the administrator of Rangpur City Corporation, we have already visited the crime scene. On behalf of the Bar Association, we want to assure the bereaved family that we are standing by you. The Bar Association will provide all kinds of legal assistance.”
He further said that after the bodies of Ganapati Chakraborty and the three other family members were recovered, police detained two suspects. Based on information provided by them, the looted jewellery was recovered. The two arrested suspects have already confessed to the murders before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
“We believe that the police investigation is proceeding in the right direction so far, thanks to the efforts of the police and the cooperation of journalists,” Advocate Aftab Uddin said.
He also said that various rumours and fabricated stories were being circulated on social media regarding the murders. Some people were also trying to give the incident a political angle.
“On behalf of the Bar Association, we request everyone not to politicise this murder case and not to spread any kind of rumours,” he said.
Advocate Aftab Uddin said that following discussions among the members of the Bar Association, they had decided not to provide legal representation to the accused in the murder of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and the three other members of his family. However, the association would stand beside the affected family and provide them with all necessary legal assistance.
He also urged journalists to present accurate and verified information about the murders.
Among those present at the press conference were Advocate Mahfuz Un Nabi Don, administrator of Rangpur City Corporation and member secretary of the Rangpur Metropolitan BNP; Advocate Sahed Kamal Ibn Khatib of the Rangpur Bar Association; Jamaat lawyer Advocate Kawsar Ali; and other leaders of the association.
