The father and elder brother of Siddhartha Das, one of the two youths arrested in connection with the murder of four members of a family in Rangpur city’s Machuapara area, have been taken into the custody of the Detective Branch (DB) for questioning. The victims were retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, 60, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, their daughter Agami Chakraborty, 25, a postgraduate student, and their son Priyam Chakraborty, 12, a fifth-grade student. Speaking to reporters on Saturday (August 29) afternoon, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Sanatan Chakraborty said Siddhartha’s father, Binoy Das, and his brother, Partha Das, had been brought in for questioning. “They will be released after the questioning,” the police official said. Earlier, police recovered the bodies of the four family members from their residence in Machuapara area. Following the incident, Gopinath Chakraborty, elder brother of the deceased Ganapati Chakraborty, filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station against unidentified accused persons. Police later arrested two youths—Mugdha Das, 23, and Siddhartha Das, 19—from the same area. Police said the two suspects subsequently gave confessional statements before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. On Tuesday, Simanta, a friend of Mugdha and Siddhartha, gave a statement before the court as a witness. Police have claimed that Mugdha, Siddhartha and Simanta consumed yaba together on the night of the incident.
