Jahangir Alam, Staff Reporter. FENI: Dengue cases in Feni have risen at an alarming rate toward the end of the monsoon season. Driven by the breeding of deadly Aedes mosquitoes in stagnant rainwater, the recently concluded month of August logged the highest number of patients recorded this year. The sudden surge in infections has triggered severe bed shortages and overwhelmed doctors and healthcare workers at local government hospitals. According to data from the District Health Office, a total of 246 dengue cases were recorded across the district over the eight months from January to August this year. Notably, August alone accounted for 145 cases—more than half of the total count. In July, the figure stood at 72, indicating that infections nearly doubled within a single month. At the sub-district (upazila) level, Feni Sadar leads the chart with 153 confirmed cases, followed by Daganbhuiyan with 35, Sonagazi with 23, Chhagalnaiya with 16, Parshuram with 10, and Fulgazi with 9. Over the past 24 hours, 10 new patients were diagnosed, with 17 individuals currently receiving treatment across various hospitals in the district. The majority of patients are admitted to Feni General Hospital, where authorities are forced to deliver care under overcrowded conditions exceeding facility capacity. Dr. Mubarak Hossain Dulal, Acting Superintendent of the hospital, said, "Despite the surge in patients, we have an adequate stock of testing kits and necessary medical supplies. We are doing our utmost to ensure proper treatment." Data from the Civil Surgeon’s Office indicates that 1,838 dengue testing kits are currently in stock across the district. Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Arifuzzaman noted, "The spread of Aedes mosquitoes has escalated in urban areas. To control dengue, citizens must remain vigilant by keeping their homes and surroundings clean and removing stagnant water." While the local municipality claims to conduct fogging and sanitation drives every Saturday and Tuesday, residents allege that the lack of effective vector control measures has failed to alleviate widespread panic. However, Krishnapada Saha, Medical Officer at Feni Municipality, maintained that cleanliness drives have been intensified across all 18 wards, with active clearance of drainage networks. Although health authorities maintain that the situation remains under control, medical experts strongly advise the public to heighten personal awareness immediately and ensure water does not accumulate in or around their households.
