Sitakunda, Chattogram: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was founded by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman with the aim of preserving the distinct identity of the motherland achieved through the Liberation War, upholding national self-identity and enabling Bangladesh to move forward with dignity and pride, said former BNP Joint Secretary General Aslam Chowdhury FCA.
He said BNP has gradually emerged as a trusted platform for the country’s development, progress and prosperity, while also playing a role in safeguarding democracy, independence and sovereignty. He described BNP as the bearer and guardian of the Bangladeshi nationalist ideology.
Aslam Chowdhury made the remarks while addressing a large rally and public gathering organized in Sitakunda municipal area on Tuesday (September 1) to mark the 48th founding anniversary of BNP.
He said Begum Khaleda Zia, wife of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and a former three-time Prime Minister, earned the title of an “uncompromising leader” through her long struggle for democracy in Bangladesh. Under her leadership, Bangladesh established itself as a unique and exemplary state on the world map, he claimed.
He further said Tarique Rahman, son of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia, led the anti-fascist movement and helped free the country from authoritarian rule. Under his “visionary and farsighted leadership,” Bangladesh is moving towards becoming a model of humane and transformative politics, he claimed.
Calling for unity among party leaders and activists, Aslam Chowdhury said BNP members must work together to advance the country’s development and progress. “There must be no division within the party,” he said.
He also expressed his commitment to developing Sitakunda and the Chattogram-4 constituency as a model of development and presenting it as an example across the country.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Kamal Kader, convener of Sitakunda Upazila BNP, and moderated by its member secretary Mohammad Morshalin.
Among others, the gathering was addressed by Upazila BNP joint conveners Johurul Alam Johur and Md. Salamat Ullah; joint member secretary Fazlul Karim Chowdhury; Sitakunda Upazila Jubo Dal President Shahabuddin Raju and General Secretary Md. Ismail Hossain; Municipal BNP Convener Zakir Hossain and Member Secretary Saleh Ahmed Solu; BNP leaders Yusuf Nizami, Aurangzeb Mostafa, Badiul Alam Badrul, Didarul Islam Mahmud, Nurul Anwar Chairman, Nuruddin and Md. Jahangir Chairman, along with senior leaders of the municipal and upazila BNP and its affiliated and associate organizations.
Following the public gathering, a large procession was held through the streets of Sitakunda municipal area, with the participation of BNP leaders and activists. The day’s programme marking the 48th founding anniversary of BNP concluded after the procession.
