Ramzan Ali, aged around 55, a resident of Nodalia village under Barabakunda Union in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram, has been killed in a shooting incident in Pakistan. According to his family, he was shot dead in a surprise attack by unidentified attackers on Sunday night.
Ramzan Ali was the second son of late Abul Khayer of Nodalia village. According to family members, he went to Pakistan around 35 years ago in search of a livelihood and had been working at a textile mill there for many years. However, he had not been in regular contact with his relatives in Bangladesh.
His sister, Mili Akter, said Ramzan used to speak to their parents over the phone occasionally while they were alive. After their deaths, he had very little communication with his relatives in Bangladesh for nearly the past eight years.
Recently, Ramzan had become eager to return to Bangladesh. His family said he had also applied to the Bangladesh Embassy regarding his return. The matter was later forwarded to Sitakunda Police Station for verification of his address. Local sources said the District Special Branch (DSB) conducted an inquiry at his village home and submitted a report. One of his brothers and two sisters currently live at the family home.
Family members said Ramzan was expected to return to Bangladesh within this week if everything went according to plan. He had also expressed his desire to get married and start a family after returning home. His sisters had already begun looking for a suitable bride for him.
Mili Akter said Ramzan had told her over the phone that after returning home following 35 years abroad, he wanted to visit and pray at his parents’ graves. However, that long-awaited dream came to an end before he could return to his homeland.
The family is now trying to bring Ramzan Ali’s body back to Bangladesh and bury him beside his parents’ graves. His sister Mili Akter has sought assistance from the Bangladesh government in bringing the body home.
The family has also urged the Bangladesh Embassy and the relevant authorities to take immediate necessary steps and provide all possible assistance in repatriating Ramzan Ali’s body to Bangladesh.
