The independent Member of Parliament for Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, Barrister Rumin Farhana, is facing public scrutiny over road and development work in various parts of the area. Residents of several unions in Sarail-Ashuganj and Bijoypur say that the area’s infrastructural problems have remained unresolved for a long time.
People from multiple areas of Sarail and Ashuganj allege that the condition of Sarail-Ashuganj has not changed much even 5 years after independence. Locals are raising questions on social media and at various public gatherings: "Why couldn't any MP bring about change? Why didn't the people of Sarail-Ashuganj get what they deserve?"
Rumin Farhana herself, after submitting her nomination papers on December 29, 2025, described Sarail-Ashuganj to journalists as "two neglected upazilas."
Rumin Farhana, BNP's International Affairs Secretary, did not get the BNP party nomination for the 13th National Parliament election and instead contested as an independent candidate with the "Duck" symbol. She said she has spoken for people's rights and against injustice for 17 years. She added that she decided to run as an independent under pressure from the people of the area.
According to the election results, she was leading with 34,460 votes after results from 45 out of 151 centers were announced.
Brahmanbaria-2 constituency includes Sarail and Ashuganj upazilas, and Budhanti and Chandura unions of Bijoypur upazila. The total number of voters is 4,09,498. Rumin Farhana's ancestral home is in Budhanti Union of Bijoypur, and her current residence is in Shahbazpur Union of Sarail Upazila.
As the BNP gave up the seat to its alliance partner Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Rumin Farhana and two other BNP leaders ran as independents. She was later expelled from the party for defying the party's decision.
The main demands of the local residents are road repairs, improvement of communication systems, and an end to long-standing neglect. In recent days, they have held courtyard meetings and human chains in various unions, calling on the MP to start development work quickly.
Rumin Farhana said, "The people of my area are my strength. Whatever they want is my decision." She also said she has informed the administration and will take immediate action if there are any problems in the constituency.
Now the local people want to see how quickly the election promises are turned into reality.
