Police have rescued a businessman who was allegedly abducted from Chattogram city and held captive in the hilly area of Mohamaya Lake in Mirsarai. Eight members of an alleged abduction gang, including its mastermind, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
The information was disclosed at a press briefing held by the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) on Thursday (September 10).
According to police, businessman Helal Uddin was forcibly taken away in a microbus from the Shulokbahar area of Chattogram city on the afternoon of September 7 following a dispute over Tk 469,000 in outstanding business-related payments.
The following day, the abductors allegedly called Helal’s wife and demanded Tk 5 million as ransom, threatening to kill him if the money was not paid. His wife subsequently filed a case with Panchlaish Police Station.
Based on information gathered through technology and intelligence sources, police conducted raids at several locations in Chattogram city and arrested three suspects.
Following information obtained from the arrested individuals, police later conducted an operation at an abandoned cottage belonging to the Forest Department inside the Mohamaya Lake area of Mirsarai. Helal Uddin was rescued from the location, while five more alleged members of the gang were arrested.
Police said the alleged mastermind, Abul Hashem, had hired the other suspects for Tk 100,000 to abduct Helal in an attempt to recover the outstanding money.
Legal proceedings against the arrested suspects are currently underway, police said.
