Police have recovered the hanging body of Pulak Chatterjee, the former Barishal bureau chief of the newspaper *Daily Samakal*. His body was recovered on Friday (September 11) at 8 PM from the *Daily Samakal* bureau office located on Parara Road in the city.
Pulak Chatterjee was the son of Bishwapati Chatterjee from the Kalibari Road area of the city. The 57-year-old Chatterjee had previously served as the bureau chief for *Samakal*. His family stated that he was relieved of his duties around 2023 and had been unemployed since then.
He is survived by his wife and a daughter.
Multiple teams from law enforcement agencies, including the CID, are working at the scene. Police claim a suicide note was found at the location. Citing relatives and colleagues, the police stated that the suicide notes were written in Pulak Chatterjee's handwriting.
However, *Kaler Kantho* could not independently verify whether the notes were indeed written by the deceased journalist.
Police claim the suicide notes were addressed to Pulak Chatterjee's wife, children, and brother, as well as S.M. Zakir Hossain (General Secretary of the Barishal Press Club) and Sumon Chowdhury (currently in charge of the *Daily Samakal* Barishal bureau office).
Abu Saleh Mohammad Raihan, Commissioner of Barishal Metropolitan Police, who was present at the scene, told *Kaler Kantho*, "We have recovered the body. It is preliminarily suspected to be a case of suicide, as five suicide notes were found in his pocket.
In them, he stated that he had committed suicide."
Police claim that in his 'suicide note,' Pulak Chatterjee wrote, "No one is responsible for my death. I am suffering from several ailments. I can no longer bear this agony. Due to my illness, I have also fallen behind socially. Unable to endure the pain of the disease, I have committed suicide." ...so that no one is harassed because of this.’
Police claim that a suicide note was written addressed to Sumon Chowdhury, who is currently in charge of the Barishal bureau office of the daily newspaper *Samakal*. Law enforcement personnel present at the scene stated that the ‘suicide note’ read: ‘I have worked with you for eighteen years. Please forgive me if I ever caused you any pain. I am sorry for putting you in an embarrassing situation. If possible, please collect the money owed to me by *Samakal* and hand it over to your sister-in-law [my wife].’
Police stated that the ‘suicide note’ was also addressed to his wife, Priyanka, reading: ‘Priyanka, please forgive me. Life goes on for everyone. Please look after Prakriti [Pulak Chatterjee’s daughter] and ensure her education continues. Stay close to Deepak [Pulak Chatterjee’s brother]; he will look after you all.’
Police claim the ‘suicide note’ also addressed Pulak Chatterjee’s brother, Deepak Chatterjee, saying: ‘Forgive me. I have left a heavy burden on you. Please look after Priyanka [Pulak Chatterjee’s wife] and Prakriti [Pulak Chatterjee’s daughter].’
Police reported that the ‘suicide note’ also addressed S.M. Zakir Hossain, General Secretary of the Barishal Press Club, stating: ‘Since I have committed suicide voluntarily, there is no need for an autopsy. Please arrange for my body to be handed over to my family without administrative complications. I share many memories with you. Please look after my wife, Priyanka, and Prakriti. Goodbye.’
