Senior Joint Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, has called on everyone to remain vigilant to ensure that no darkness or difficult times return to the country following the end of 17 years of political oppression. He stated that during the 17 years of Awami rule, a reign of terror was unleashed on political dissidents, pushing thousands of families into an uncertain future.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at a remembrance meeting and key-handover ceremony on Sunday afternoon at the Omoria Farukia Dakhil Madrasa premises in Forhadnagar, Bhorbazar, under Feni Sadar Upazila. The event was organized by "Amra BNP Paribar" to hand over the keys to a newly constructed house gifted to the family of Jubo Dal leader Harunur Rashid—who was killed in police firing during a political program in Feni on December 4, 2013—on behalf of BNP Acting Chairman Tarek Rahman.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, "Countless leaders and activists across the country fell victim to enforced disappearances and killings while doing politics. Field-level activists like Harun, who gave their lives to police bullets, did not embezzle funds from projects like the Padma Bridge or Metro Rail; their dream was to establish a democratic and discrimination-free future."
Overwhelmed with emotion upon receiving a new roof over her head, Zohra Begum, the widow of the deceased Harun, expressed her deep gratitude to Tarek Rahman and the party leaders. Notably, Tarek Rahman had personally funded the marriage of Harun’s elder daughter in 2017. Currently, "Amra BNP Paribar" is bearing the entire financial responsibility of the family, including the education of his younger son, who is in ninth grade.
Chaired by Feni District BNP Convener Sheikh Farid Bahar, the event was attended by "Amra BNP Paribar" Member Secretary Agriculturist Moksedul Momin Mithun, BNP leaders Professor Zainal Abedin, Engineer Ashraf Uddin Bokul, Munshi Rafiqul Alam Majnu, Rehana Akhtar Ranu, Mashiur Rahman Biplob, alongside a large number of local Jubo Dal and affiliate organization leaders.
Following the remembrance meeting, the leaders offered prayers (Ziyarat) at the grave of the late Harunur Rashid and officially inaugurated the new house by cutting the ribbon. Later in the afternoon, the senior BNP leader left for Chauddagram in Cumilla to hand over another house key on behalf of Tarek Rahman to an affected family devastated by a fire.
