Five illegal shops, including a tin-shed structure that had occupied land belonging to the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) for nearly four decades, were demolished in Kaukhali of Pirojpur on Wednesday (September 16).
The eviction drive was conducted beside the northern side of Kachuyakati Bailey Bridge in Kaukhali upazila of Pirojpur district. The operation was carried out in the presence of Pirojpur District Administration Revenue Deputy Collector Md. Rubaiyat Ferdous and RHD Sub-Divisional Engineer Md. Al Amin. The illegal structures were demolished using a bulldozer.According to RHD sources, a work order has been issued for the construction of a modern PC girder bridge in the Kachuyakati area of Kaukhali. However, the long-standing illegal structures on RHD land had been creating obstacles to the construction project. The RHD had issued a final notice asking the occupants to remove the illegal structures by September 14. As the structures were not removed within the stipulated time, the eviction drive was conducted on Wednesday in accordance with court directives and in the public interest. The eviction has freed the RHD land from long-standing encroachment and cleared the way for the bridge construction project to move forward. Local residents also expect the new bridge to ease traffic congestion and improve communication in the area.
Relevant officials said that following the removal of the illegal structures, there should be no major obstacle to the construction of the planned bridge.
