Staff Reporter. Despite using sophisticated techniques to bypass security scanners, a passenger was apprehended with 534 grams of smuggled gold at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong during a joint security operation. The suspect, identified as Mohammad Hasan Murad from Nasirnagar in Chittagong’s Rauzan upazila, arrived on Friday morning (September 18) aboard Salam Air flight OV-401 from Muscat. According to airport sources, security personnel from the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), National Security Intelligence (NSI), and Customs Intelligence grew suspicious of Murad’s erratic behavior as he was crossing the customs hall. A joint task force intercepted him and conducted a detailed search of his luggage. Officers seized 425 grams of gold ingots, 106 grams of gold ornaments, and 3 grams of gold paste. The metal items were concealed using special techniques designed to create interference on customs scanners, allowing them to initially pass undetected by automated screening. Engineer Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil, Public Relations Officer at Shah Amanat International Airport, confirmed that the government revenue, including duties and taxes on the seized gold, was calculated at BDT 1.176 crore. The confiscated gold has been handed over to customs authorities. Customs Intelligence is currently preparing to file a formal case and initiate legal proceedings against the detainee. Airport officials reaffirmed that strict surveillance by intelligence agencies and customs authorities will continue to curb smuggling activities.
