M Badal Khandakar (District Correspondent), B Baria. Morakathi village in Ward No. 1 of Shahbazpur Union in Sarail Upazila of Brahmanbaria. The only unpaved road to thousands of acres of farmland starts from the west side, next to Janu Mia's house in the village. The current condition of the road is so deplorable that the farmers' distress is now at its peak. A visit to the spot shows that the entire road is submerged in mud and water. Large potholes have been created due to the movement of tractors and bullock carts. A little rain causes knee-deep mud to accumulate. People are somehow moving by placing sacks on the side. Local farmers say that several hundred farmers from 3-4 villages use this road every day to bring various crops including paddy and jute. Going to the field with cows and buffaloes is now like a battle. Often sacks of paddy have to be carried on shoulders. During the monsoon season, the suffering increases manifold. A farmer from Morakathi village said, "This is not a road, it's a death trap. We cultivate thousands of acres of land through this road to the west of Janu Mia's house. We cannot take cows, we cannot bring paddy. It has been lying like this for many years." The locals complain that even though years have passed, no initiative has been taken to repair this important agricultural road. Informing the public representatives again and again has been of no use. Therefore, the affected farmers and locals have strongly demanded the Upazila administration and Nadia Pathan Papon, MP of Brahmanbaria reserved seat for women, and Rumin Farhana, MP of Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, to quickly fill this road with soil and make it brick soling or paved.
