Naeem Ahmed, Jaintapur-Gowainghat Sylhet. Various types of narcotics, including Fensedyl, Yaba, Ganja and Indian liquor, are reportedly entering Bangladesh through different points along the Sylhet border adjacent to India’s Meghalaya state. There are allegations that several border routes in Jaflong, Bichnakandi, Pantumai and Jaintapur are being used to smuggle these drugs into the country. Despite regular operations, border patrols and increased surveillance by law enforcement agencies, the inflow of narcotics has not been completely stopped. According to concerned authorities, drug traffickers are changing their smuggling tactics in response to increased law enforcement activities. Taking advantage of opportunities, they are reportedly attempting to use remote border routes, waterways and less-frequented paths to smuggle narcotics. Local sources said that various remote hilly trails, rivers and routes near canals in the border areas have become relatively convenient for smugglers. It is alleged that narcotics are brought in through these routes in small consignments, temporarily stored in border areas and later transported to different parts of the country. Meanwhile, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), police and other law enforcement agencies have been conducting operations at different times to prevent drug trafficking, seizing narcotics and arresting individuals allegedly involved in the trade. However, concerns remain in the border areas as traffickers continue to attempt to bring narcotics into the country using new methods. Concerned citizens said that surveillance along the border needs to be strengthened further, while those involved in drug trafficking should be identified and brought to justice. They also called for greater public awareness in border areas and stronger anti-drug initiatives.
