Staff Reporter “Is coming to work in Cumilla my crime? Why was my only son killed? I demand an answer!”—The air around the Cumilla University (CoU) campus grew heavy with the heart-wrenching lament of Dr. Nahida Begum, an associate professor of the Department of Bangla. A day after going missing, police recovered the battered body of her 13-year-old son, Ishayek Shahriar Apratim. On Saturday afternoon, police retrieved Apratim's body from the Sananda Hill area in the nearby Jangal Lalmai forest adjacent to the campus. The body has been sent to the hospital for an autopsy, and police have launched an investigation. Authorities confirmed that the victim sustained severe head injuries. Left to Take Photos, Never Returned According to family sources, Apratim left home around 3:30 PM on Friday, mentioning he was going out to take photos with friends. He went missing shortly after. Unable to trace him despite searching all possible locations, his father, K. M. Firoz Shahriar, filed a General Diary (GD) with the Cumilla Sadar South Police Station. Less than 24 hours later, the teenager's lifeless body was discovered in the hilltop jungle. MP Expresses Outrage, Demands Justice Within 90 Days Expressing deep condolences to the bereaved family, local Member of Parliament (Sadar constituency) Monirul Haq Chowdhury voiced his outrage, stating, "As the local MP, I feel deeply ashamed and saddened. We failed to protect an innocent child. I will discuss this matter with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. I demand that justice for this brutal murder be delivered within the next 90 days." Suspect Detained; Multiple Teams Investigating Shortly after the incident, Kotbari Police detained a youth named Tuhin, son of Nurul Alam from the Sananda area, as a suspect. Inspector Mohibul Alam Bhuiyan of Kotbari Police Station confirmed the detention. Cumilla Superintendent of Police (SP) Anisuzzaman said, "Multiple teams are already working on the ground, and several crucial clues and evidence have been recovered. The detainee is currently being interrogated. Our operation will continue non-stop until the actual perpetrators are arrested." The tragic death of Apratim has cast a deep pall of gloom over the university community and local residents. Classmates, CoU faculty, students, and locals have demanded the swift arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible.
