The core strength and accountability of journalists lie solely with the general public—not with any group or individual. Objective, truthful, and just journalism is the only way for the media to earn credibility. Muhammad Kader Gani Chowdhury, Managing Director and Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), made these remarks as the chief guest at a training workshop titled "Journalism, Video Journalism, and Mobile Journalism" organized for mofussil journalists at the National Institute of Mass Communication (NIMC) on Wednesday.
Presided over by NIMC Director General Muhammad Hiruzzaman, the event featured Additional Director General Rownak Jahan as a special guest. The session was conducted by Director Dr. Md. Maruf Nawaz, with senior institute officials and trainee journalists in attendance.
'People Hate Servile Journalism'
The BSS Chief Editor stated that journalists are the sentinels of society and must never reduce themselves to partisan stooges. The general public deeply despises servile and sycophantic journalism. Issuing a stern warning, he added, "Journalists must not become 'pet dogs.' Calling truth as truth and black as black is the true essence of journalism. A mix of truth and falsehood can be many things, but not journalism."
'Newspapers Are the People's Parliament'
Highlighting the importance of print media, he said, "Newspaper is the people's parliament always in session." He further noted that journalists are like students whose exam scripts are evaluated by the 180 million people of the country. As the public constantly monitors who reports the truth and who spreads lies, a journalist's sense of responsibility must be far higher than that of an average person.
'Power Play' and Caution in Online Journalism
Comparing modern online and digital journalism to T20 cricket batting, Kader Gani Chowdhury remarked, "In online journalism, you must take control of the game right from the start. Alongside delivering breaking news in the first over, rapid dissemination of information is crucial much like a 'power play.' However, in the rush to deliver news quickly, false, half-true, or misleading information must not be served under any circumstances."
Addressing new and mofussil journalists, he concluded that there is no substitute for regular study and practice to become a good journalist. The habit of reading books and newspapers is what makes a journalist responsible and acceptable to society.
