Biplob Kumar Das, Staff Reporter. In Sadarpur, Faridpur, a person named Alomgir Ojha (45) died after being bitten while trying to catch a venomous black snake, mistaking it for a harmless turtle. He breathed his last on Friday (18 September) while undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital. The deceased Alomgir was a resident of Chhilenama village in Akoter Char Union of Sadarpur Upazila. Although he was an auto-rickshaw driver by profession, he was also known in the area for his exorcism and snake charming skills. According to local and eyewitness sources, on Friday morning, Alomgir went to catch a snake after hearing reports of a snake infestation at the Shaitankhali ghat in the upazila. Mistaking the snake for a harmless turtle, he attempted to catch it with his bare hands, and it bit him. However, immediately after the bite, instead of going to the hospital, Alomgir first went to his father. His father tried to remove the poison through exorcism. During the exorcism, as Alomgir's physical condition rapidly deteriorated, he was taken to the nearby Charbhadrason Upazila Health Complex. The on-duty doctor there, upon seeing the severity of the poison, immediately instructed that he be sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Later, while undergoing treatment there, he died in the afternoon. The chairman of Akoter Char Union Parishad, Md. Aslam Bepari, confirmed the incident and stated that this tragic accident occurred due to a mistake in identifying the species. He has inquired about the deceased's family. After this incident, local aware circles have urged that instead of relying on traditional healers or exorcism for snakebite victims, they should be taken immediately to the nearest hospital for antivenom administration.
