Journalist faces death threats over news report. Crime Reporter,Chattogram. A journalist has been accused of being pressured, tried to 'manage' him with money and threatened in various ways after publishing news about various irregularities including the railway's government quarter trading and illegal construction on Bangladesh Railway land in the Ambagan area of Chattogram city. The victim journalist has alleged that he was even threatened with filing a case against him if he did not stop publishing the news. According to the complaint, since the news was published based on information and data about irregularities related to Bangladesh Railway land and government quarters, pressure has been exerted on the journalist through various means. It is also alleged that he was tried to 'manage' him in exchange for money to stop publishing the news. He also claimed that there were also cases of lobbying and intimidation by various individuals. In continuation of this, it is alleged that on September 17 at 12:31 am, Railway Officer Md. Sharif called the journalist from the number 01717-421509 and abused him in foul language and threatened to kill him. It is also alleged that he expressed anger over the issue of publishing the news on the phone and threatened to look him up. Fearing for his safety in the situation, the journalist finally filed an online General Diary (GD) with Chattogram Khulshi Police Station. He said that the tracking number of the GD is FJRLRZ. The journalist's question is, is it a crime to investigate or publish news about irregularities against a government institution or official? Are people in government positions above accountability? If an allegation is not true, there is an opportunity to refute it through statements, documents and legal proceedings by the concerned party. But if money is offered, pressure, threats or threats of filing a case to prevent the publication of news, it raises serious questions about the freedom and security of journalism. The responsibility of a journalist is to present information of public interest to the public. At the same time, it is important to verify the information, accept the statements of the relevant parties, and follow the principles of responsible journalism when publishing news. If there is incorrect or untrue information in a report, the relevant person or organization has the right to demand correction or take legal action. However, those concerned believe that if there is an allegation of threatening a journalist or disrupting his or her security due to publishing news, an impartial investigation is necessary. Because if the safety of the journalist is not ensured, there may be fear of publishing information of irregularities and corruption in the public interest. In this incident, there is a demand to verify the truth of the complaint and take necessary legal action and ensure the safety of the journalist. At the same time, those concerned have demanded an impartial investigation into the allegations of irregularities that have been published in the news, including renting out government quarters for the railway, and constructing illegal structures on Bangladesh Railway land.
