A second-grade schoolgirl, Ishita Das, has died after battling for her life for nearly a month following a serious auto-rickshaw accident in Sitakunda, Chattogram. She died while undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Chattogram Medical College Hospital on Wednesday (September 23).
Ishita Das was a second-grade student of Kajipara Shishu Niketan in Sitakunda. Her death has cast a shadow of grief over her family, relatives, teachers, fellow students and local residents.
Accident on Her Way Home from School
According to her family and local sources, Ishita was seriously injured after being hit by an auto-rickshaw at around 12:00 noon on August 25 while returning home from school.
She was subsequently rescued and admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. As her condition deteriorated, she was transferred to the ICU for intensive treatment.
During her month-long treatment, family members, individuals and volunteer organizations came forward to support her. Many people also provided financial assistance to help meet the cost of her treatment.
The family had hoped that Ishita would respond to treatment and return home safely to resume her normal life and attend school again. However, that hope did not come true. After fighting for her life for nearly a month, she died while undergoing treatment in the ICU on Wednesday.
Road Safety Concerns Raised After the Tragedy
Ishita’s death has renewed concerns among local residents over the reckless and uncontrolled movement of auto-rickshaws on roads in Sitakunda.
According to local residents, some vehicles are allegedly being driven recklessly and without following traffic rules, putting pedestrians and school-going children at risk.
They have called for stronger monitoring and effective enforcement of traffic laws to ensure the safety of children and pedestrians on local roads.
Demand for Investigation and Legal Action
Local residents have demanded a proper investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ishita’s death, identification of the auto-rickshaw involved in the accident and legal action against those found responsible.
They have also urged the authorities concerned to take effective measures to control reckless and unregulated vehicle movement and ensure the safety of schoolchildren and pedestrians.
The death of a child not only leaves a family devastated but also raises serious questions about road safety and the effective enforcement of traffic regulations.
Local residents hope that a proper investigation will establish responsibility for the incident and that effective measures will be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
