Jahangir Alam, Staff Reporter. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members seized 149,800 Yaba tablets following a heavy gunfight with drug smugglers near the Hnila border area in Teknaf. However, four suspects affiliated with the smuggling syndicate managed to escape under the cover of darkness. The incident took place around 11:30 pm on Wednesday (September 23) in the border area adjacent to the Anwar Project under the Hnila Border Outpost (BOP) in Teknaf. According to BGB sources, acting on a tip-off, a special quick-response patrol team from BGB Battalion 64 (Hnila BOP) took up position in the Anwar Project area. Around 11:30 pm, four individuals carrying plastic sacks on their shoulders were spotted entering Bangladeshi territory from the Myanmar border. When the patrol team ordered them to halt, the smugglers opened fire on the BGB personnel. The BGB members retaliated in self-defense. Facing counterfire, the smugglers abandoned their cargo and fled into the adjacent Naf River and dense jungle along the border. Subsequent searches of the scene led to the recovery of three abandoned sacks containing 149,800 Yaba pills. Confirming the incident, Commanding Officer of BGB Battalion 64, Lieutenant Colonel Md. Zohirul Islam, said, "BGB maintains a zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking and illegal border crossings. Intelligence surveillance and combing operations in the border areas are ongoing to identify and apprehend the escaped smugglers." Legal proceedings, including filing a case with Teknaf Police Station and depositing the seized Yaba pills at the battalion headquarters, are underway.
