S M Akash Mathbaria (Pirojpur) Correspondent. A lack of blood has become a source of immense suffering and uncertainty for the healthcare of approximately half a million people in Mathbaria Upazila, located in the southern coastal district of Pirojpur. Due to the absence of any permanent blood bank or modern blood storage facility—whether in the public or private sector—relatives are often left frantic and helpless, scrambling to secure blood during critical moments for patients in life-threatening conditions. Often, the inability to procure blood in time creates a critical situation where the lives of critically ill patients hang in the balance. According to local residents and hospital sources, the Mathbaria Upazila Health Complex is the sole healthcare lifeline for a large coastal population. Furthermore, there is a constant, massive demand for blood for various road accident cases, emergency surgeries, childbirth, and patients suffering from thalassemia. However, due to the absence of any modern government-run blood storage facility or blood bank in the upazila, hundreds of patients seeking care—and their families—are facing immense difficulties. To meet blood requirements during emergencies, patients primarily rely on various local voluntary social organizations, Facebook-based blood donor groups, and personal acquaintances who donate blood. Although voluntary organizations formed by coastal youths work tirelessly to save lives, this reliance on personal networks often proves ineffective in the face of sudden, massive demand or challenges posed by inaccessible locations. Local blood donor Sajib Mitra points out that, due to the area's remote geographical location, it is often impossible to find a blood donor during emergencies. Even when a donor is found, there are no institutional facilities for blood collection and transport, making the process an exhausting ordeal for the donor in their effort to save a patient's life. Establishing a modern, fully equipped blood bank here has become an urgent necessity to safeguard the lives of the half-million people living in this coastal region. Md. Belal Nazim, an advisor to the Mathbaria Betmore Bondhumohol Blood Donors Organization, stated that the organization—formed by local friends—operates through voluntary blood donations. We have around two hundred blood donors; however, at times of urgent need, it becomes difficult to find blood of the negative blood groups. It would be beneficial to have a blood bank here. Acknowledging the blood shortage, Dr. Soumitra Sinha Roy, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Mathbaria Upazila Health Complex, stated that there is no designated government blood bank or facility with blood storage capabilities in Mathbaria. Patients and their relatives face immense suffering during emergencies, particularly when blood of 'negative' groups or rare categories is required. To enhance the overall quality of medical services in Mathbaria and save the lives of critically ill patients, it is imperative to urgently establish an institutional blood bank through a government or private initiative. Ordinary citizens and prominent figures of this coastal upazila have demanded that the higher authorities of the Health Department immediately establish a modern blood bank at the Mathbaria Upazila Health Complex.
