Taslima Khandakar Nusrat (Sarail Upazila)
Origin and History:
This dog was born in Sarail Upazila of Brahmanbaria. It is believed that this breed was formed by a combination of foreign Greyhound, hunting dogs from the Arab region, and local wild dogs. During British rule, this distinct Bangladeshi breed was created by crossbreeding the Greyhounds of the English rulers with the wild dogs of the jungles of Tripura.
The most popular folklore about it is:
About "200 years ago, the zamindar of Sarail, Dewan Mostafa Ali" brought a Greyhound dog from an English citizen in exchange for "an elephant". While hunting, the dog got lost in the jungle and returned after 6 months in a pregnant condition. Its puppies looked different from other dogs, much like a tiger. It is believed that this special breed originated as a result of mating with a tiger in the jungle.
Basically, the Dewan family of "Isa Khan of the Baro Bhuiyans" started the tradition of raising this dog. They used to raise this dog for hunting and home security.
Characteristics and Heritage:
Male dogs are 25-28 inches tall, weighing 23-33 kg, female dogs are 23-26 inches tall, weighing 18-28 kg.
It can run at a speed of about 55 kilometers per hour. Average lifespan is 8-14 years.
Long, slim build, strong chest, erect ears and tiger-like body color.
The most glorious history of this dog is in the Liberation War. The Sarail Greyhound "Field Marshal", pet of General M A G Osmani, the Commander-in-Chief of the Mukti Bahini, once saved him from an attack by Pakistani commandos. Although the dog was sent away in an injured condition, after 4 years it found its master - which is still legendary.
Once upon a time, this dog was in almost every house in Sarail, for security and to chase away jackals. Now it is on the verge of extinction. Only a handful of families, such as two brothers Tapan Lal Rabidas and Jatan Lal Rabidas of Chauraguda village of Noagaon Union of Sarail Upazila, still maintain this tradition from generation to generation.
Although _The National Society for the Sarail Hound of Bangladesh_ was established in 2006, the Bangladesh Kennel Club has not yet officially recognized it.
The Sarail Hound is not just a dog, it is a witness to the heroism, zamindari heritage and liberation war of the Titas-washed region.
