In an effort to ease traffic congestion and restore pedestrian access, the Chhagalnaiya Upazila administration conducted a drive to remove illegal structures occupying footpaths and public roads in the municipality area on Wednesday (July 22). During the operation, an unauthorized office of the banned Awami League, built illegally on the sidewalk at the municipality's Zero Point, was demolished using an excavator.
The eviction drive was carried out on both sides of the main road, including Zero Point, led by Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Omar Faruk.
Key municipal personnel and law enforcement officers were present during the operation, including Municipal Executive Officer Tajel Hossain Howlader, Sub-Assistant Engineer Mizanur Rahman, and Market Inspector Mozammel Haque Buli.
Local sources reported that numerous permanent and temporary illegal shops had encroached upon the footpaths and main thoroughfares in the primary market area. This encroachment frequently caused severe traffic gridlocks during peak hours and light rain. Without accessible sidewalks, pedestrians were forced to walk on the main road at considerable risk of accidents.
Following the clearance, local traders and commuters expressed relief over the restored access and improved road conditions.
Speaking after the drive, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Omar Faruk stated:
"This initiative was taken to facilitate smooth public movement, reduce traffic congestion, and maintain the aesthetic appeal of the town. No individual or organization will be permitted to occupy footpaths or government land illegally. Such enforcement drives will continue in the future
