Accident occurs at an unmanned level crossing in Sadar Dakshin; train services remain normal

An ambulance was severely damaged after being hit by the Dhaka-bound-to-Chattogram-bound Subarna Express train at a level crossing in Sadar Dakshin upazila of Cumilla on Thursday night. The ambulance driver was injured in the accident.
The incident took place at around 8:15pm on October 1, 2026, at the Jangalia-Noagaon intersection level crossing in Ward No. 21 of Sadar Dakshin upazila.
The ambulance, bearing registration number Chattogram Metro-Cha-71-0242, was crossing the railway line when it was struck by the moving train, according to local sources.
The impact sent the ambulance flying off the railway track and left it badly crushed. The driver, identified as Nantu, a resident of Debidwar upazila in Cumilla, was the only person inside the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Nantu was reportedly thrown from his seat due to the impact and sustained injuries. He later managed to get up and reportedly left the scene in an auto-rickshaw.
After receiving information about the accident, Sub-Inspector Sohrab Hossain of the Cumilla Railway Police Outpost went to the spot. Police took steps to remove the wreckage and broken parts of the ambulance from the railway track to ensure uninterrupted train movement.
The Subarna Express subsequently passed through the accident site and continued its journey towards Chattogram. Railway communication on the route remained normal after the incident.
Locals said the level crossing did not have a gatekeeper at the time of the accident. They alleged that the absence of a gatekeeper may have contributed to the collision.
However, railway police said the exact cause of the accident would be determined after an investigation. Authorities are taking necessary legal steps in connection with the incident.
The accident has once again raised concerns among local residents about safety measures at unmanned railway crossings, particularly where roads and railway lines intersect.
