Staff Reporter Chattogram Port is finally freeing itself from a major safety hazard that lingered over the port for two long decades. The official removal of dangerous and highly flammable chemicals abandoned in the port yard due to legal disputes, pending cases, and failure by importers to clear their consignments has officially commenced. Under a special initiative by the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), the drive was launched with the removal of 9 containers in the first phase. According to port sources, approximately 81 tonnes of highly hazardous chemicals have been lying abandoned in 29 containers for years. These chemical substances posed a severe threat of massive fires or major disasters at the port premises. Following this initial phase, the remaining 20 containers will be safely shifted to designated locations in phases. Officials concerned stated that clearing these containers through standard customs and port procedures was not feasible due to prolonged complications. However, prioritizing environmental protection and overall port safety, the removal process was initiated under a special framework. Experts and port users noted that the demand to clear hazardous substances gained urgency following the tragic Beirut port explosion and the BM Container Depot disaster in Sitakunda. This landmark move by the Chittagong Port Authority is expected to significantly elevate overall port security. Industry stakeholders believe that resolving this long-standing bottleneck will not only secure the port yard but also free up valuable space, accelerating cargo handling and boosting operational efficiency
