SP Office Gheraoed Demanding Release of Arrested Drug Case Suspect Sujon in Dimla, Several Arrested.

Sujon Islam, who is in jail in a drug case in Dimla upazila of Nilphamari, demonstrated in front of the Nilphamari Police Superintendent (SP) office demanding his release. At that time, police chased the protesters and reportedly detained 10 to 12 people. The incident took place in front of the SP office in Nilphamari town on Saturday (October 3) afternoon. The detained persons are being taken to Nilphamari Sadar Police Station and interrogated, according to police sources. Among the detained persons are—Manju, Samiul Islam Hafez, Soad and Abu Sama. Besides, several others have also reportedly been detained. According to police records, Md. Sujon Islam of Purba Dohalpara area of Dimla has several cases filed against him under the Narcotics Control Act at Nilphamari Sadar and Darus Salam police stations in Dhaka. The records mention cases filed at Nilphamari Sadar Police Station in 2018 and 2021 and at Darus Salam Police Station in Dhaka in 2021. Among these, there is also information that a charge sheet was submitted to the court after investigation in one of the cases. Recently, Sujon was arrested in a case and sent to jail through the court. After that, his relatives and hired people gathered in front of the SP office on Saturday afternoon and demonstrated demanding his release. Eyewitnesses said that at one point, when police asked the protesters to leave, the situation became tense. Later, police chased them and detained several people and took them to Sadar Police Station. Sujon's relatives claimed that he had been wrongly implicated in a drug case. They demanded his release after uncovering the actual facts through a fair investigation. According to local sources, although Sujon was born into a poor family, it is being discussed in the area that over the past few years he has suddenly become the owner of huge wealth and crores of taka without any visible legitimate business. However, his statement regarding the source of this wealth was not available. Earlier, when law enforcement agencies were searching for him, he allegedly remained in hiding for a long time, according to locals. Later, after coming to Dimla Sadar, he opened a showroom for a new battery-powered auto-rickshaw and allegedly tried to introduce himself as a businessman. Locals alleged that Sujon made his father a candidate for the post of UP member in the UP election and spent around Tk 5 million to get him elected. The incident created widespread discussion in the area. Later, allegations that Sujon suddenly became the owner of huge wealth through drug business created a stir in the area. This time, he was also reportedly campaigning himself as a candidate for chairman in the Khagakharibari Union Parishad election of the upazila, according to local sources. After the news of Sujon's arrest became known in the area, many members of the local conscious community welcomed the law enforcement agencies. Police records contain information about several drug-related cases against Sujon. However, no official statement has so far been received from the police regarding these allegations and the cases against him.
