A written application has been submitted to the Land Minister and Member of Parliament for Rajshahi Sadar-2 constituency, demanding an investigation and legal action against allegations of extortion, intimidation, fraud, and unprofessional conduct using the identity of journalism, as well as ensuring a safe working environment for professional journalists in Rajshahi. A section of professional journalists in Rajshahi submitted the appeal.
The application stated that some individuals are allegedly using the identity and status of journalism to exert influence over various institutions and individuals, threaten them, secure undue benefits, and serve personal or group interests. To distinguish genuine journalists from such individuals, a demand was also made to establish an identity verification system in coordination with the relevant media houses and journalistic organizations.
The application also raised allegations regarding the current situation of the Rajshahi Press Club. It stated that there has been long-standing conflict and controversy surrounding the management of the historic Rajshahi Press Club. Neutral verification of allegations regarding controversial activities against several individuals, including Golam Mostafa Mamun, was requested. The application also mentioned that an audio clip of him demanding extortion had recently circulated on social media.
Furthermore, allegations of political involvement, named accused in various cases, and past involvement in attacks on students and the general public were raised against several other individuals. The applicants urged authorities to verify these claims based on case documents and statements from law enforcement agencies before taking appropriate action.
The application also cited an incident on September 30 at around 3:15 PM, where a motorcycle showdown, shouting, and tenseness were allegedly created targeting specific journalists in Rajshahi. Concerns were expressed that this incident could lead to division and conflict among journalists.
The applicants stated that if any individual engages in illegal activities using the identity of a journalist, the responsibility does not fall on the professional journalistic community. At the same time, it must be ensured that the freedom of journalism and freedom of expression are not obstructed in any way.
The petition demanded a neutral investigation and action under existing laws if allegations of crime, intimidation, extortion, or fraud using journalist identities are found. Additionally, a proposal was made to coordinate with media outlets and recognized journalistic organizations to verify whether an individual is genuinely affiliated with a specific media house.
Law enforcement agencies were requested to issue necessary directives so that no one can carry out unethical or illegal activities using press cards, identity cards, or the names of media outlets. A demand was also made to ensure that genuine journalists do not face harassment, intimidation, or obstacles while performing their professional duties.
The application further highlighted the need to increase communication and coordination between the police and media personnel during the execution of professional duties. For this purpose, it proposed organizing regular exchange meetings between the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) and professional journalistic organizations, as well as establishing a clear coordination mechanism to combat fake journalism.
Moreover, it called for taking legal action against individuals based on evidence, rather than blaming media institutions or journalist organizations for personal misdeeds.
The applicants believe that protecting the freedom and dignity of journalism while curbing identity abuse will strengthen mutual trust among media personnel, law enforcement agencies, and the general public in Rajshahi.
Copies of the application have also been sent to the Divisional Commissioner of Rajshahi, DIG of Rajshahi Range, Administrator of Rajshahi City Corporation, Deputy Commissioner, RMP Commissioner, and relevant leaders of the Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP.
