Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan Addresses Opening Ceremony as Chief Guest M A Khayer Emon, Cumilla Correspondent: The 53rd National Summer Sports Competition has officially begun in Cumilla amid a festive atmosphere, with Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan addressing the opening ceremony as the chief guest. The event was held on Tuesday (October 6) under the initiative of the Cumilla district administration and the concerned education authorities. Teachers, students, sports organisers, government officials and invited guests from different educational institutions across the district attended the programme. The ceremony began with the hoisting of the national flag and other formalities, followed by a colourful sports rally participated in by students from various educational institutions. The participants carried banners and placards representing their respective institutions, creating a vibrant atmosphere at the venue. Addressing the ceremony, Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan said sports play an important role alongside education in developing students’ physical fitness, mental strength, leadership skills and discipline. He urged students to take part in sports regularly in addition to their academic activities, stressing that education and sports are complementary to the overall development of a student. The minister said sports help young people develop a competitive spirit, tolerance, teamwork and discipline. He emphasised that students need not only academic excellence but also sound physical and mental health to become capable leaders of the future. He further said national-level sports competitions are not merely platforms for determining winners; they also provide an important opportunity to identify talented athletes from different parts of the country. Such competitions enable promising young athletes to develop their skills and demonstrate their potential. Speakers at the programme also highlighted the importance of creating a stronger sports culture in educational institutions. They observed that many students currently spend considerable time on mobile phones and digital platforms, which may reduce their involvement in physical activities and outdoor sports. They stressed that regular participation in sports can help students stay away from drugs, violence, juvenile delinquency and other social problems. Strengthening sports activities in educational institutions, they said, is essential for building a healthy, disciplined and talented younger generation. Students from various educational institutions are participating in different events of the 53rd National Summer Sports Competition. The participating students expressed enthusiasm and excitement throughout the opening programme. The organisers said the competition would provide talented students with an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities and move forward to higher levels of competition. The opening programme concluded with the oath-taking ceremony for the participating athletes, following which the formal competitions in different sporting events began. The organisers expressed hope that such initiatives would continue in the future to encourage sports among students and provide greater opportunities for emerging athletes to develop their talents.
