The Upazila administration and the Upazila Fisheries Office conducted a raid on fish wholesale depots in Sitakunda, Chattogram, to ensure the protection and safe breeding of mother Hilsa during the species' peak breeding season. During the operation, two wholesalers were fined a total of Tk 10,000 for stocking Hilsa fish.
The drive was carried out on Thursday (October 8, 2026) across various fish wholesale depots in Sitakunda Upazila. As part of the "Mother Hilsa Conservation Drive-2026," the mobile court inspected the depots to monitor the stocking and preservation of Hilsa.
Legal action was taken against two wholesalers found stocking Hilsa fish. Subsequently, they were fined a total of Tk 10,000 under the Protection and Conservation of Fish Act, 1950.
The mobile court was presided over by Md. Fazle Rabbi, Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Sitakunda Upazila. Md. Motasim Billah, the Sitakunda Upazila Fisheries Officer, conducted the prosecution during the operation.
Officials stated that protecting mother Hilsa during the peak breeding season is crucial. If mother Hilsa can spawn undisturbed during this period, Hilsa production will increase, enriching the country's fisheries resources. Therefore, the administration has intensified surveillance across rivers, wholesale depots, and relevant markets to enforce the ban effectively.
The Upazila administration and Fisheries Office announced that legal action would be taken against anyone violating government directives and bans regarding the catching, transporting, selling, or stocking of Hilsa. Such raids and mobile court operations will continue to ensure the safe breeding of mother Hilsa. During the drive, officials from the concerned department urged fish traders and wholesalers to comply with the government ban and requested them to cooperate with the administration in conserving mother hilsa.
