Syed Bashir Ahmed, Chief Reporter. Jahangir Alam, who has been accused of extortion while posing as a journalist, is not an employee of the daily Kalbela. The Kalbela authorities had previously relieved Jahangir who used to solicit advertisements on a commission basis of his duties. Consequently, there are no grounds to identify him as a Kalbela staff member. Jahangir Alam was primarily engaged in soliciting advertisements for the newspaper from prisons across the country on a commission basis. Subsequently, various allegations of misconduct, irregularities, and extortion—committed by exploiting Kalbela name surfaced against him. Notably, the authorities took cognizance of a General Diary (GD) filed against Jahangir at New Market Police Station regarding one such allegation. To safeguard the organization's reputation and maintain professional discipline, the authorities relieved him of his responsibilities. Most recently, media reports regarding allegations of extortion committed by him while posing as a *Kalbela* journalist came to the authorities' attention. Regarding this matter, the *Kalbela* authorities state that Jahangir Alam solicited advertisements on a commission basis; he was neither a regular employee nor a journalist for the newspaper. It is important to note that, considering all aspects, *Kalbela* authorities had already severed all ties with Jahangir Alam and removed him from the role of soliciting advertisements on commission. Earlier, on September 30, Khushi—the wife of an individual known as "Picchi Raja"—held a press conference at the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association seeking her husband's whereabouts. During the conference, she accused the alleged journalist Jahangir Alam of misappropriating a large sum of money under the pretext of securing her husband's release from prison, as well as of blackmail and involvement in her husband's enforced disappearance.
